Time

One definition of time by Merriam Webster is: a nonspatial continuum that is measured in terms of events which succeed one another from past through present to future.  However there are numerous additional definitions – 14 in the context of time as a noun alone!  I don’t know why but I wasn’t expecting that many.

There are so many contexts in which to use the word time.

It is time for reading.  What time do we have to be at the restaurant? Times are hard.  Move with the times.

Time is also defined as: finite as contrasted with infinite duration.  Interesting.  Especially in terms of our life here on Earth.  Our lives here on Earth are finite. Knowing this how do we best spend our limited time here on Earth?  How do we choose to live our lives?

This question has become a big focus for me as of late.  Last week Ben wanted to play hockey one morning (consists of a Little Tikes soccer net, two kids hockey sticks, us using flashcards as “hockey skaters” and a mini-PlayDoh container as a puck) just as we were about to leave for pre-school and work. My immediate reaction was to say no and that we had to get going.  Then I stood there and looked at his little cherub face just wanting five minutes with Momma to play hockey.  So I said “Okay buddy – but only five minutes.”  He was so excited.  In that moment I realized there aren’t infinite opportunities to have that special time with my Ben.

One of my goals in 2012 is to live everyday with intention.  Be aware of what is going on around me. Live life with purpose.  Slow down and cherish the little moments like taking five minutes to play hockey.  Make memories with the ones you love.  Be kind to people.  Be more accepting. Be less judgemental – which can be quite a challenge and maybe a topic for a post all it’s own!

It is definitely a process.  Remaining calm in the morning while trying to get out the door is still a challenge.  Every day takes a conscious effort right now to take a step back and just be.  Be real. Be alive. Be present.

Time.  It goes by so fast. It isn’t guaranteed – it can be gone in a second. While it seems like living into your 90s is ancient, blink and you are there. My senior living residents always tell us to not take time for granted.  I am going to listen to their wisdom.

How will you spend your time?
